Who should consider hosting in the cloud?

I have a number of high traffic web sites. By high traffic I mean approximately 10,000 hits a day - so not high traffic in comparison to the big boys on the internet, but high enough to warrant a high powered VPS or a dedicated server.

There seems to be a lot of hype about the cloud and that it can offer huge cost savings. However, I gather that most clouds have a standard monthly charge on top of their utility billing so presumably traditional hosting is cheaper up until a point, but at that point economies of scale kicks in, the lines cross, and the cloud becomes the cheaper alternative.

Anyone know where that point is? My real question is, do you think I would make cost savings by hosting in the cloud or should I stick with my VPS for the time being? (my VPS is powerful and costs £50/month.

The billing model varies

The billing model varies between providers so it is very difficult to give you a definite generic answer. A lot of the companies have online price estimation tools (like a calculator) that will take your estimated bandwidth usage and storage requirements to give you an estimation of what your monthly bill will come to. I'd suggest having a look at some of these and seeing what prices they come out with.

I'd be very interested to know how the prices compare between provider, maybe you can let us know what you decide and why?

Have a look here http://www.cloudhosting.co.uk/content/cloud-hosting-comparison for links to calculators..

Thanks for the reply - I've

Thanks for the reply - I've had a look at some of the online calculators, I'll probably compile a spreadsheet and find out who is the cheapest...This way of doing things is certainly more labour intensive than traditional hosting where you pay a fixed monthly fee, but I'm hoping that my little bit of effort up front might be able to save me cost and hassle in the future.

I'll keep you posted..

I'd be very interested to have this information, I have a large number of sites and whilst I am convinced by the scaleability advantages of the cloud, I'm not sold on the cost savings yet. An ex-colleague of mine, now working for a startup, told me that his company converted to hosting in the cloud (think it was AWS) and now they are looking at moving back because it's too expensive...
